On Friday (October 31), the EURUSD traded near 1.1560, and the market performed cautiously. The major currency pair struggled to achieve an effective rebound as the U.S. dollar remained strong on the back of multiple positive factors - weakening market expectations for a dovish stance from the Federal Reserve and continued improvement in trade frictions.
After hitting its highest level (99.72) since early August hit on Thursday, the U.S. dollar index is consolidating strong gains in the previous two trading days, which has become a key factor restricting the rise of the euro against the dollar.
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said at a press conference after cutting interest rates by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00% on Wednesday that further monetary easing in December is "far from an established fact" and the market's dovish expectations for the Federal Reserve have gradually cooled. Against this backdrop, any meaningful dollar depreciation now seems elusive. In fact, Federal Reserve Chairman Powell has clearly refuted market expectations of another interest rate cut in December, coupled with the rekindled demand for safe havens. These factors will help the US dollar avoid further deep declines.
On the other hand, the European Central Bank kept its key deposit rate unchanged at 2% for the third consecutive time on Thursday and said that inflation remains close to its medium-term target of 2%. However, the European Central Bank also warned that the economic outlook for the euro zone remains uncertain due to global trade disputes and geopolitical tensions. In addition, policymakers are divided over future interest rate cuts, which may dampen aggressive long bets on the euro and thus limit the upside for the euro against the dollar.
In Friday's trading session, the market will focus on the preliminary Eurozone Harmonized Consumer Price Index data for October, which will be released at 18:00 Beijing time.
Technical Analysis
EUR/USD traded around 1.1570 on Friday, still within Thursday's trading range. The short-term trend remains bearish as the pair trades below the 20-day moving average (MA, 1.1622).
The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) is hovering near 40.00, below the midline but not into oversold territory, reinforcing short-term bearish momentum.
On the downside, if the exchange rate falls below the low of 1.1546 on October 30, it may further test the low of 1.1527 on August 5, and then test the support of the low of 1.1391 on August 1.
On the upside, if the exchange rate breaks through the October 17 high of 1.1727, it may open up upside space and gradually test the July high of 1.1829 and the 1.1900 integer resistance level.
