Silver prices (XAG/USD) held steady near Thursday's high of $49.00 during Friday's Asian trading session. Although the market has reduced expectations for further interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, silver has still shown strong resilience.
According to the CMEFedWatch tool, the probability that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates by 25 basis points at its December meeting has dropped to 72.8% from 91.1% a week ago.
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell noted in a policy statement on Wednesday that a rate cut in December is "far from a foregone conclusion."
This statement quickly cooled the market's expectations for easing. Analysts believe this hawkish bias is weighing on non-interest-bearing assets such as gold and silver, as a stabilizing interest rate outlook means the opportunity cost of holding precious metals rises.
On Friday, the market will focus on the speeches of members of the Federal Open Market www.xn--xm-5s9cx14e.committee (FOMC) - Atlanta Fed President Bostic and Cleveland Fed President Hammack. Investors hope to get more clues about the direction of interest rates in December from the remarks of the two officials to judge the logic behind Powell's "pause of interest rate cuts" remarks.
At the same time, the easing of global trade relations further suppressed safe-haven buying. U.S. President Trump said on Thursday that major Asian countries would "open up their export resources" to Washington and were willing to cooperate in dealing with the fentanyl issue while accelerating exchanges of agricultural products.
These positive statements boosted market risk appetite and caused safe-haven funds to flow out of the precious metals market.
From a technical perspective, the short-term trend of silver prices tends to be cautious. The price is currently consolidating near $49.00 and has still not been able to effectively break above the 20-day exponential moving average (EMA), which is located near $48.55.
The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) fell below 60, indicating that bull momentum is fading.
The lower support is at $44.47 (high on September 23), and the upper resistance is at the historical high of $54.50.
Analysts believe that if silver prices fall below the $48.50 support, it may test the $44 range in the short term; if it breaks through $49.50, it may restart the upward trend.
